Identity Theft: 3 Misconceptions About Credit Freeze May 25, 2007
|
|
Why have more than 30 states so far passed Credit Freeze laws (also known as Security Freeze and Credit Lock)? Why were many officials in some states initially reluctant to pass such laws? Why did many of them ultimately change their mind, and pass Credit Freeze / Security Freeze / Credit Lock Laws, and in many cases voted almost unanimously? The answer is simple: a Credit Freeze / Security Freeze / Credit Lock is highly effective in fighting and deterring Identity Theft.
Many did not realize the threat that Identity Theft poses to our society, the extent of its reach, and its ability to spread contagiously unless it is swiftly dealt with. Many did not realize that such laws, when structured properly, can provide the consumer flexibility, without necessarily jeopardizing business activity. Many realized that Not Passing Credit Freeze Laws , is simply no longer an option. Many realized that you simply cannot be taken seriously as a fighter of Identity Theft, without supporting such laws.
For residents of Credit Freeze states, why haven't many of them taken advantage of such laws? There are at least three main reasons: A- Many falsely think that a Credit Freeze freezes your credit, disabling you from using your Credit Cards, B- Many falsely think that if you place a Credit Freeze, there is no mechanism to allow you to obtain legitimate loans, jobs, or rental properties C- Many falsely think that if you place a Credit Freeze / Security Freeze / Credit Lock, you will negatively impact your Credit Score. |

A Credit Freeze does not freeze your Credit. It freezes access to your Credit Report. If you place a Credit Freeze, you prevent anyone from accessing your Credit Report. Hence, a criminal is not capable of fraudulently obtaining a loan in your name by stealing your identity. Creditors usually demand to access your Credit Report in order to issue a new loan or a new Credit Card. When such creditor is not able to access your Credit Report, they should not approve such new loan or new credit application. Many individuals become victims of Identity Theft when criminals obtain new loans in their name. In many instances, victims are not even aware such new loans have been issued, until they receive payment demands from creditors.
However, by placing a Credit Freeze, your existing credit accounts are not affected. You can continue to use your existing credit cards. Furthermore, there is a mechanism for you to obtain new loans and new credit. To do so, you can remove the Credit Freeze. You can Permanently remove a Credit Freeze, or you can Temporarily remove a Credit Freeze. There are no limits on how many times you can place and remove a Credit Freeze. In many cases you can request the Temporary Removal of a Credit Freeze for a pre-determined period of time, or for a specific Creditor. State laws stipulate that Credit Freeze removal requests must be processed within 5 days. In some states, such requirement is as little as 15 minutes. State by state Credit Freeze availability , fees, requirements and Print & Fill Kits can be found at http://www.creditlock.com/creditlockdownpro.html .
There is a reason why a Credit Freeze is also known as a Credit Lock. It is because it is a Credit Report Lock, and you are the holder of the key to such lock. You can decide when to open such lock, and when to close such lock.
Finally, a Credit Freeze / Security Freeze / Credit Lock should not negatively affect your credit score. Your credit score is a function of your payment history, outstanding balances, number of

accounts, number of credit inquiries, etc.... As a matter of a fact, a Credit Freeze / Security Freeze / Credit Lock could potentially prevent your Credit Score from being negatively impacted. If you do not have a Credit Freeze in place, and a criminal makes constant credit applications in your name, such requests could negatively impact your score. Furthermore, if you do not have a Credit Freeze in place, and a criminal obtains loans in your name, obviously without making monthly payments, your Credit Score will suffer. Once you have discovered you are a victim of Identity Theft, you may be able to remedy the situation, but it may take you several months, and in some instances even more.
These are misconceptions about Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze. In addition to misconceptions, many |
