Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze Credit Locking is also known as Credit Freezing, Credit Lock, Credit Lock Down, Credit Freeze, Security Freeze, Security Freezing, Credit Report Lock, Credit Report Freeze
When you initiate a Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze, access to your Credit Report is blocked. Credit Reporting agencies will provide you a PIN necessary to remove such Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze. You can authorize access to your Credit Report through PIN protected temporary removal or permanent removal of the Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze. Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze is now available, as of November 1, 2007, in all 50 Sates as well as Washington D.C. In 2003, California became the first state in the US to give its residents the right to initiate Credit Locking /Credit Freezing / Security Freeze. During the following four years, an additional 40 states passed Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze laws. Ultimately, the Three National Credit Bureaus (Transunion, Equifax, and Experian) also decided to make Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze available in other States on a voluntary basis. As a result, it is now available in all 50 states and Washington D.C.
The following states have passed Credit Lock / Credit Freeze Laws: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia (Washington D.C.), Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts. Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. It should be noted that Arkansas, Kansas, Mississippi and South Dakota passed Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze laws for Identity Theft victims only. However, the Three National Credit Bureaus made it available also to non-victims under their Voluntary Program.
The other 11 States where Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze is offered under the Voluntary Program are: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia. An interactive color-coded map is available at http://www.creditlock.com/creditlockdownpro.html , depicting availability of Credit Freeze and providing relevant kits. Lenders typically require to see your Credit Report before issuing a loan in your name. If lenders cannot see your Credit Report, it is unlikely they will issue a loan in your name. Hence, Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze should reduce the risk that loans (credit cards) will be issued fraudulently in your name. This should reduce Credit Card Fraud.

Furthermore, all three Credit Reporting Agencies must be contacted to place a Credit Lock. The associated fees also differ from state to state. In most states, fees are waived if you prove you are a victim of Identity Theft. See the table below for more details.
When you lock your credit (freeze your credit), you will receive a PIN (Personal Identification Number) from the three Credit Reporting Agencies.
| |
|
You can use this PIN in order to remove the Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze on either a temporary or permanent basis (although you may be required to submit a written request to permanently remove a Security Freeze / Credit Freeze / Credit Lock). It can take up to 3 to 5 days for Credit Reporting agencies to process Security Freeze removal requests. Temporary lifts of a Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze can be specified for a date range, or for a specific creditor.
Identity Theft victims who Freeze / Lock their Credit reduce the likelihood of issuance of additional fraudulent loans in their name.

Question Is Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze Right For Me?
Answer
Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze is an important step to reduce risk of Identity Theft. Other steps also include periodically reviewing your Credit Report, initiating Credit Surveillance/Monitoring, initiating Fraud Alerts, withholding personal data from strangers, and more... If you are actively looking for a job, looking for credit card offers, looking for a home to rent, then Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze may not be optimal. Creditors, landlords and employers require to see your Credit Report, and removing a Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze can take up to 3 to 5 days. If you are already a victim of Identity Theft, Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze will reduce the likelihood of issuance of additional loans in your name.

Question Is it a good idea to have Credit Locking / Credit Freezing / Security Freeze along with Credit Monitoring and/or other services?
Answer
Credit Monitoring does not block access to your Credit Report, while Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze does. Meanwhile, Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze does not provide you with alerts to activity in your Credit Report, while Credit Surveillance/Monitoring does. It is true that once a Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze is in place, there should be no new loan activity in your Credit Report. However, there could still be activity surrounding performance of existing loans, as well as new activity caused by any Credit Lock removals / Credit Freeze Thaw / Security Freeze removals (temporary or permanent).
A good analogy is a home security system. It is important to have a door at your house to prevent thieves from entering freely. It is important to have a lock on such door (and sometimes multiple locks), to make it hard for thieves to force their way into your house. It is important to also have motion detection sensors, in case a thief managed somehow to enter despite locked doors and windows. You can think of Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze as the lock on the door and windows. You can think of Credit Monitoring / Credit Surveillance as the motion sensors, and hidden surveillance cameras.

Answer Date Specific Temporary Removal of a Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze is when you request the removal of a Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze on a temporary basis, for a specified period of time, after which the Credit Lock / Credit Freeze / Security Freeze is reinstated. _______________________________________________________________________
Question What is a Creditor Specific Temporary Removal of a Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze?
Answer Creditor Specific Temporary Removal of a Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze is when you request the removal of a Credit Freeze / Credit Lock / Security Freeze on a temporary basis, for a specific creditor. This allows the specified creditor to access your credit report, but no one else can. _______________________________________________________________________
