Shredding is the act of cutting into small pieces, or shreds. Shredders are machines that shred, destroying private documents into tiny pieces, in order to prevent unauthorized persons from retrieving and using confidential information. Shredding is done by Governments (to protect State Secrets), Companies (to protect employee privacy and competitive advantages), and Individuals (to avoid Identity Theft through Dumpster Diving).
Shredders come in varying specifications and prices. Shredders can cost as little at $40, and as much as $40,000. The most important features of a shredder are:
A- the type and size of shred it produces: 1- Strip-Cut (long narrow pieces) 2- Cross-Cut (confetti-like pieces) 3- Super Micro-Cut High Security (producing super micro confetti, virtually impossible to reassemble to obtain original document)
B- the shredding speed - expressed as FPM (feet per minute)
C- the shredder capacity - expressed as Sheet Capacity (sheets shredded per pass, or at one time)
D- the throat opening - the size of the opening where paper is inserted into the shredder (expressed in inches)
The cost of a shredder increases with increased capacity, faster speeds, smaller shreds, increased durability, and increased quality.
