TransUnion Fights Identity Theft with Credit Monitoring Featuring a Credit Report Lock
June 11, 2007

Identity Theft protection services continue to evolve in order to provide consumers a higly effective weapon against Identity Theft. Millions of consumers have already signed up for active Credit Monitoring services, giving rise to a new multi-billion dollar industry.

Some critics of Credit Monitoring services have emphazised the fact that although Credit Monitoring services will help consumers detect Identity Theft, such services do not actually help consumers deter Identity Theft. It is true that if a consumer employing Credit Monitoring services ia alerted to unusual activity on his Credit Report, then obviously such activity has already occured.

Recently, Transunion, one of the three national Credit Reporting bureaus, has incorporated a new feature into its Credit Monitoring services that will actually help deter Identity Theft. Transunion, through its TrueCredit services, is offering subscribers to its 3-Bureau Credit Monitoring the ability to Lock and Unlock their Transunion Credit Report online with "just one click". When you lock your Credit Report, you are blocking access to your Credit Report. Hence, Identity Theft crimninals are prevented from opening new credit accounts, or securing new loans, under the name of their victims. Such Credit Lock feature is also known as Credit Freeze or Security Freeze, and has become possible following the passage of Credit Freeze laws in more than half of all states in the U.S. However, typically, consumers would need to Lock access to their Credit Report with all 3 Credit Reporting agencies for maximum security.

Consumers who are interested in Locking access to their Credit Report, without having to purchase a Credit Monitoring service, can do so in states where such Credit Freeze laws have passed. Details and kits for doing so are available at http://www.creditlock.com/creditlockdownpro.html . In addition, consumers can now streamline such service with Credit monitoring by subscribing to Transunion's 3-Bureau Credit Monitoring. However, such feature by Transunion only allows consumers to lock access to their Credit Report with Transunion, and not with the other Credit Reporting agencies such as Experian and Equifax.

Some industry experts, who have previously characterized the three Credit Bureaus as "Anti Credit Freeze" may be surprised by Transunion's latest move. Such experts had alleged that a Credit Freeze was not in the best interest of the  Credit bureaus, who may consider Credit Freeze a threat to their revenue streams from Credit monitoring, as well as selling access to consumers' Credit Reports.

One industry expert, on the other hand, had deviated from such characterization, and had attempted to work with at least one of the three credit bureaus to bring Credit Freeze to the masses. Bachar Samawi, Chief Strategist at Gammawealth Strategy & Research, LLC, operator of the Identity Theft Protection website found at
http://www.Creditlock.com , explains:

"We always believed that the ability of Locking and Unlocking access to a Credit Report is essential to the security of the entire industry. We have been thinking about such tool since the first half of 2002, when we registered for the name of our website,
www.CreditLock.com .

We did not take a hostile attitude towards the Credit Reporting agencies. On the contrary. We actually believed that it is in the best long term financial interest of the credit Reporting agencies to embrace Credit Freeze. We gave the Credit Reporting agencies the benefit of the doubt. For example, in the first quarter of 2007, we submitted an informal proposal to Transunion, illustrating our perspective of the business advantages to Transunion for allowing consumers Lock and Unlock their Credit Reports in a friendly manner. We actually would like
www.CreditLock.com to become the gateway for such mechanism: a One-Stop identity theft protection website, that provides consumers information on Identity Theft Protection, as well as the ability to Lock and Unlock access to their Credit Reports online for all three Credit Reporting agencies through www.Creditlock.com.

This latest move by Transunion is a move in the right direction. We believe Equifax and Experian will soon follow with a similar service. The current feature provided by Transunion only allows consumers to Lock and Unlock their Credit Report with Transunion. For real Identity Theft protection, such feature needs to work with all three Credit Reporting agencies. Once Equifax and Experian introduce similar features to Transunion's, it will ultimately become inevitable that a mechanism will be instituted to Lock and Unlock Credit Reports online with all three Credit Reporting agencies regardless of the provider of service. A neutral gateway, such as
www.CreditLock.com , can collaborate with the Credit Reporting agencies to give them equal exposure, and provide such mechanism."

Transunion's 3-Bureau Credit Monitoring service costs $14.95 and features: A- unlimited access to Credit Reports and Scores to all 3 Credit Bureaus, B- notification within 24 hours of critical changes to all 3 reports, C- ability to Lock and Unlock Transunion Credit Report with "just one click", D- 25K Identity Theft insurance at no additional cost (where available), E- the ability to cancel anytime, with no obligation.

Consumers who are interested in Locking access to their Credit Report with the other Credit Reporting agencies, or who are not interested in purchasing Credit Monitoring, can do so by retrieving relevant information and kits at
